What is expected from participants?
Participants are expected to contribute as full-time members of their assigned legislative office, take initiative, complete assigned work professionally, and remain flexible as the legislative session becomes busier.
Is prior legislative or political experience required?
No. Prior experience can be helpful, but it is not required. Initiative, professionalism, communication, writing, critical thinking, reliability, and willingness to learn are important.
Who can participate?
The program is designed for undergraduate, graduate, and law students who can meet the program and legislative office requirements. Students from all fields of study may apply; the opportunity is not limited to law or political science.
What is the time commitment?
This program requires a full-time commitment from January through June 2027. College classes must be managed outside legislative office work hours. Exact working hours and schedule expectations will be discussed with the assigned legislative office.
What does the work typically include?
Responsibilities vary by office and may include legislative research, written materials, office projects, committee-related work, Capitol events, and other legislative or constituent activities.
Can students attend committee hearings and floor sessions?
Interns may attend committee hearings and observe House floor proceedings from the gallery or through office viewing systems. Direct access to the House floor is generally restricted.
What is included in the program?
The program includes preparation for the legislative environment, exposure to the Texas legislative process, placement experience in a legislative office, professional development, networking opportunities, and college credit.
What is not included?
Students are responsible for making and paying for their own housing and travel or transportation arrangements for the program. Compensation, if any, depends on the individual legislative office and program arrangement. Financial limitations shouldn't stop anyone from applying — let us know your situation on the application, and we'll do our best to help connect you with sponsors or community support for your stay in Austin.
Does the program provide college credit?
Yes. The program will provide college credit. Students should coordinate with their college or university regarding registration, applicable academic requirements, and how the credit will apply toward their degree program.
What about international students or students on an F-1 visa?
Eligibility depends on immigration, university, and legislative office requirements. International students should confirm authorization with their university's international student office before participating.
Are GPA, research experience, or recommendations required?
Application requirements may vary. GPA, research experience, recommendations, and other materials may be considered, but overall fit, initiative, communication skills, and work ethic are also important.
How will students prepare for the program?
Students will receive preparation on the Texas legislative process, how bills move through committees and chambers, and how to navigate the Capitol and legislative environment.
What are the expected outcomes?
Participants gain firsthand experience in state government and public policy — strengthening research, writing, communication, and networking skills, and building professional relationships worth adding to a resume. They'll also see how lobbying, bureaucracy, and negotiation shape real decisions, and that meaningful change takes patience, persistence, and the ability to work with many different people.
Will students receive proof of completion?
Recognition may vary by legislative office and can include internship documentation, a certificate, or other official recognition.
